Economic aspects of bean production in Brazil

Abstract

Beans are one of the most traditional and important foods in Brazilian cuisine. Thus, this study aimed to analyze some economic aspects related to bean production in Brazil. Through a shift-share model, the variation in bean cultivation area was decomposed into scale and substitution effects. Moreover, the variation in production amount was decomposed into price, yield and area effects. The results indicate that other crops have substituted bean in certain cultivation areas. This reduction in bean cultivation area has been mitigated through increases in bean yield, mainly in the 3rd cropping season. Thus, the 3rd cropping season represents an important alternative in order to keep domestic production at levels that ensure meeting the domestic demand.
