Abstract

The objective of this study was to provide information to contribute to a concrete diagnosis of the Brazilian rice production chain throught the calculation and analysis of the gross domestic product (GDP) of this chain between 2000 and 2020. A low representation of the chain in agribusiness was identified, which reflect the small size of rice production in comparison to other agricultural activities in which Brazil is a major exporter. The rice production has remained close to a decreasing domestic demand, and there has not been sufficient competitiveness for a relevant external insertion, despite the productive advances and the low complexity and differentiation in the chain, whose main final product is rice grain.
