Characterization of agribusiness system of soybean in Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract

Due to the strong presence of soybean in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and its consequent importance in the economy of the state, this study aims to characterize the links of the agribusiness system of soybean production, and briefly describe how the relationship between the constituent agents is. To this end, this study sought data obtained by the competent state and national authorities. Finally, the study analyzed these data to demonstrate the characteristics and interrelationships in the system. Results indicated the presence of six links in the commodity chain, which are highly dependent on each other; the foreign sector as the main target of the system; and low value-added production.
