Abstract

This article aims to present and discuss the situation of the new agricultural frontier in sugar cane, emphasizing the new genetic improvements as a way of increasing the national competitiveness. It also underscores the use of its byproducts in sugar and alcohol production, especially vinhoto, yeasts, and bagasse. It comments on the contribution of genetic improvement on the reduction of agricultural pests and plant diseases, cost reduction, increase of efficiency and productivity, and new varieties of plants which are adaptable to local conditions in each region. The paper mentions the contribution of agricultural research to the production chain. It concludes commenting on current environmental concerns and underscores some recommendations on sustainable management and actions for public policies.
