Abstract

Based on structured questionnaires and interviews with key informants, the life strategies of the settlers of three settlements, in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, were evaluated, after most families had received the release of the resolutive clauses of the domain title. The settlements show important environmental differences, which results in different land prices. The titling tends to increase the domain security and the insertion of settlers in the market. Part of the families embarked on a productive strategy, with access to credit and, another part, on a strategy for sale and rent, in which the maintenance of the house is also somewhat variable. In general, mechanizable land tend to be leased or sold, repeating the general trend of production concentration in the country.
