Abstract

The objective of this article was to identify which variables influence the number of organic producers in the country, taking as its main hypothesis the fact that the technical assistance and rural extension (ATER) of the public network is essential for the expansion of the organic product market. For this, we used data from the 2017 agricultural census (Censo Agropecuário de 2017) and the basic municipal information survey of IBGE (Pesquisa de Informações Básicas Municipais do IBGE). The results show that variables such as the farmer´s education, establishment size, and population density influence the number of organic producers in the municipality. In addition, a significant importance of the municipal incentive programs for the organic production was observed, in which an important role is attributed to the public sector in this stimulus via public policies in Brazil.
