Competitiveness of Brazilian corn in the international trade

Abstract

This study analyzed the competitiveness of maize export, based on competitiveness indicators such as Revealed Comparative Advantage Index, Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage Index, Position Indicator, Coverage Rate and Exports Performance Indicator in the period from 2005 to 2015. For this propose, the major maize exporters have been considered in the analysis, e.g. United States of America, Brazil, Argentina and Ukraine. The results have shown that the maize is presenting great dynamic and being one of the most competitive sectors in the Brazilian agribusiness in the past years. Competitiveness indicators for Brazilian maize had exhibited increasing rates and becoming close to those found for the consolidated exporters’ players. However, to consolidate this position and increase the current performance, the country needs to improve local logistical infrastructure as well as create new dynamics for the agriculture policies instruments.
