Impacts of soybean production in the economy of Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract

The soybean in grains stands out in national and international trade. In state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, it ranks among the major crops produced and sold, having a positive correlation with other sectors of the economy. The objective of this study is to analyze the output, income, employment and sectoral linkages in order to know the importance of soybean in grains to Mato Grosso do Sul, using the matrix for current account and the table of resources and state uses to calculate multipliers and the composition of these variables for the State. In this context, it was found that soybean in grains is mainly related to purchases arising from trades and to sales in a higher percentage of their production for the agricultural processing industries. These relationships contribute to the positioning of soybean in grains in tenth place in Mato Grosso do Sul regarding the generation of production and income, and in twentieth place regarding employment generation.
