This study analyzed the behavior of Brazilian exports of raw sugar and soybean oil to India, over the period of 1999 to 2010. The indices of regional orientation (RO) and Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) were used. The results indicated not only that Brazil has comparative advantages in the production of raw sugar and soybean oil, but also that these commodities are significantly oriented towards India, except raw sugar, which alternates between years of high and low regional orientation. Consequently, Brazil is competitive in the world market of raw sugar and soybean oil, and there is also strong dependence between the two countries, which can be seen from the large decline in the Indian sugarcane harvest, followed by the increase in the amount of this commodity imported by India from Brazil.Downloads
