Abstract

The pork meat is the world main source of animal protein, but it represents a modest share in the meat international market. Despite the higher international competition and considering the low growth of the domestic market, Brazilian pork meat producers reached an exceptional performance in the period between 1995 and 2005, above all with its foreign customers. Technological improvements, higher production scales and specialization and also the better vertical coordination are the bases of this performance. The goal of this descriptive study was to collect available informations, organize it in a commodity system approach to present the main economic and organizational dimensions of the Brazilian pork meat supply chain, emphasizing both industries and producers strategies.
