Abstract

Brazil and Japan have a history of cooperation in relation mainly to human resources initiated a hundred years ago. Another important feature is the complementarity of the two economies, since Brazil has a large area for agriculture and can therefore produce food with lower costs than Japan, while Japan is specialized in higher technology products. Despite these characteristics, Brazil has not increased its exports to Japan. This fact stems from the increased trade between Asian countries and the consequent exclusion of Western countries. The agribusiness trade balance is increasing as a result only of increase in exports, since imports are stagnant. There are possibilities of increasing trade integration between Brazil and Japan, but it is necessary to increase the commitment to the establishment of sanitary and phytosanitary agreement for the meat market. Moreover, it is necessary to establish partnerships to increase the Japanese demand for biofuels (ethanol).
