Abstract

This paper aims to present the current situation and likely future of wood energy in Brazil, within the current potential, the profile of the energy matrix, and based on the results from a recent doctor degree’s thesis in the University of Brasilia and including a parallel investigation. Lignocellulosic energy, whether in the form of native wood, planted wood, densified or not wood/ forests wastes, as well as thermally, chemically or mechanically processed wood, may replace fossil fuels and atomic energy under investment conditions and public policies. Wood energy is competitive in cost and investments for its generation, is environmental and renewable, generates regional development, and has great future potential, and in addition it demands less technology. This paper concludes with the observation that wood energy has been and could be a modern alternative in the near future to take an important, economic and strategic position in the Brazilian energetic matrix.
