Abstract

Part of the Northeast Region of Brazil, the state of Alagoas has low levels of development. Its economy is based mainly on the sugar cane industry, trade, and services; therefore, it is necessary to identify economic activities that may generate jobs and income. Honey has potential to meet these needs. The honey production in Alagoas is underdeveloped, so its sales in international markets must be stimulated, because this would generate surpluses in the trade balance (Brazil does not import honey, only exports), and because its international market is expanding. Access to markets of honey from Alagoas requires, as a condition, compliance with the technical requirements of importing countries, most of which belong to the first world. This study proposes a tool for market access that takes into account these technical requirements. At the same time, this study highlights the importance of encouraging the implementation of Local Productive Arrangements (LPAs).
