The objective o this article was to examine the changes introduced by the new gas law in the Brazilian natural gas scenario, with a special focus on the biogas and biomethane chain. The investigation is based on federal and state laws, scientific articles, technical documents, and relevant statistics. Biomethane, obtained through biogas purification, is a renewable source derived from organic matter biodigestion, which contributes to the reduction of environmental impacts of rural, industrial, and urban activities. The conclusion is that the proposed changes in the new law create opportunities for biomethane in the gas market, favoring its consolidation. However, six issues and challenges are identified that require attention for the effective consolidation of the biogas and biomethane market, as follows: energy transition, national production, system management, quality and safety, integration of small producers, and sector-specific public policies.Downloads
