Agricultural area expansion: Mato Grosso and Matopiba

Abstract

The study analyzes the MT and MA, TO, PI and BA (MATOPIBA) states differences in terms of agricultural area expansion between permanent and temporary crops, at mesoregions level, from 1994 to 2017. The study uses data from Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. About temporary crops, there is a remarkable growth of area in MT State, that overcomes agricultural area for temporary crops in MATOPIBA states, and it highlights the Mato Grosso North, Mato Grosso Northeast, and Mato Grosso Southeast. about permanent crops, there is dominance by MATOPIBA mesoregions and Bahia Central North, Bahia Northeast, Bahia Central South and Bahia South must be cited. Such information represent inputs for agricultural public policies in terms of credit support and logistical improvements, allowing mapping agricultural profile detected in different spaces. As note for further researches, a zoom on the MATOPIBA counties is suggested.
