Abstract

The article addresses the job qualification issues, with a focus on the level of competence required by the tasks of the occupational work activities. To this end, it assesses the complementarity between the cotton production and the qualification of the employment occupational structure in the municipalities of Mato Grosso state, Brazil, in the period 2003–2018. Econometric analysis of panel data with models of pooling and random effects were used to estimate the direction and intensity of the impacts that three major groups of the Brazilian classification of occupations (Classificação Brasileira de Ocupações – CBO 2002) exercised on the gross value of the municipal cotton production. The objective of this work was to analyze the interaction between the levels of occupational competence and the growth of cotton production. The results show that occupations with a lower level of competence tend to be replaced with the growth of the cotton production. Mid-level occupations are complementary to the growth of cotton farming, and the results for higher-level occupations are not statistically significant.
