Abstract

The main objective is to evaluate the evolution of Brazil’s performance in the national and international sugar market, from 1990 to 2019. As a theoretical basis, the national and international literature related to the theme of economic competitiveness is used. The results show that, according to Brazil’s prominent position, climatic conditions, low production costs, large volume of planted area with potential for expansion, investment in research and development, among others, including the deregulation of the sector in the 1990s and 1990s. the devaluation. On the other hand, it is a market with strong government intervention, mainly via US and European trade policies. However, the expectation of an increase in ethanol-demanding countries may lead to a reduction in sugar stocks and better domestic and foreign prices.
