Abstract

The objective of this article was to study the impact of ongoing and planned changes in Brazilian logistics on the production chains of poultry and pigs. Initially, commercial flows of corn and soybeans among the Brazilian states were stablished. Then, the effect of the new logistic configuration on these cereals prices and their impact on the production costs of pigs and poultry and on their products in the national and international markets were analyzed. It was concluded that the changes in the Brazilian logistics should affect the competitiveness and spatial dynamics of the swine and poultry chains. To reduce these effects, especially to Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states, new logistics should include infrastructures that enable the access to Central West grain production with lower freight costs. Finally, it is necessary to improve the road network and logistics in order to reduce the transport cost of products from meat processing plants to consumer and exporter centers.
