Evaluation of the Pró-Genética Program of the State of Minas Gerais

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the Genetic Quality Improvement Program of the Bovine Herd of the State of Minas Gerais (Pró-Genética) in the Triângulo Mineiro mesoregion. Specifically, it was based on: (i) evaluating the operationalization of the Program, within the framework of the fairs; and (ii) analyze the beneficiaries’ perception of the Pró-Genética Program. The empirical strategy was divided in two parts, the first one refers to the analysis of the operationalization of the Pró-Genética, via fairs, carried out through the crossing of data collected with some actors related to the fomenting institutions of the Program. The second part reports the analysis of the program beneficiaries’ perceptions regarding the operationalization of the program and the animals purchased, using primary data collected through the application of questionnaires. The main results of the research reveal that the quantity offered was greater than the quantity demanded for the period under analysis. This fact, it becomes essential to “marry” the demand with the offer so that the Pró-Genética Program achieves better results. In addition, it was possible to perceive from the collected data that in the study region there is a demand for breeding animals that is not being attended. In this sense, it is the responsibility of government representatives and other entities to point out solutions to this mismatch between low marketing and demand in the region. How much the perception of the producers regarding the operationalization of Pró-Genética and the animals acquired generally reflected a positive perception of the beneficiaries regarding the Program and the contentment withthe animals.
