Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the role of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to afford the new economic phase of Brazilian sugarcane industry, which has taken place from 2000 through 2015. Specifically, we aim to address the results of the latest BNDES´programs to support that sector. The methodology is the review of available literature as well as the analysis of the secondary data, organized in the form of graphs and table. The study shows that despite the BNDES’s efforts to stimulate the sugarcane industry during the first fifteen years of the current century, mainly through the creation of new loan programs, there is no total borrowing, which demonstrates the need for a better adequacy of credit programs to sugarcane industry reality.
