Abstract

The paper presents a new methodology of calculation of terms of trade indexes for the sugar and alcohol sector in Brazil, using price received indexes and farm product price indexes. The terms of trade were estimated by the ratio of the prices received on the sale of cane, sugar and ethanol, and the prices paid by the various agricultural and industrial inputs. The empirical demonstration of the methodology was focused on the sugar and ethanol industry in the State of São Paulo, between November 2011 and June 2013. In the analyzed period, the terms of trade indexes showed a deterioration of purchasing power and income of producers, which in this case are the sugarcane mills located in São Paulo - Brazil.
