Abstract

The territorial identity is a differentiator of products and services that can be recognized as Geographical Indication (GI). The GI, in turn, is a certification that adds cultural, economic, political and environmental value to the products and services. Therefore, is considered a promoter mechanism of the territorial development. As a result of the research project, the Santa Catarina products that have potential, are characterized to get GI. Will be highlighted the location, the economic influences and forms of assumed recovery locally or regionally, of 27 products of the state. The research has an exploratory personality, whose sources are secondary information from the literature, documents and the Internet. It was found that many products have territorial specificities associated with soil, vegetation and climate, besides the local know-how, reflecting on their quality, which confirms their potential as a GI certification. However, it´s concluded that the certification is a stage of the valuation process of the assets and resources with territorial specificity. Since it´s integrated with the other initiatives, it can contribute to territorial development.
