Productivity in agriculture: results for Brazil and selected Brazilian states

Abstract

This paper analyzes the productivity in Brazilian agriculture in recent years, especially the period from 2000 to 2012. The paper estimates productivity indicators not only for Brazil, but also for selected Brazilian states. These states were chosen due to their relevance in the production of grains and meats in Brazil. For this purpose, the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso and Goiás were chosen. This study used the concept of total factor productivity (TFP) because it offers a broader definition of productivity, than measures that compare the product to only one input, such as labor or land. This way of measuring productivity is called partial productivity. The concept of TFP takes in consideration the gathering of all the products of crops and livestock and relates them with all inputs used in the production.
