MS Analysis of factors influencing agricultural practices in Mozambique: a literature review

Abstract

This study examines the socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural factors that influence the agricultural practices adopted by smallholder farmers in Mozambique. Family farming is a central activity for the livelihood and food security of rural populations. Understanding the factors that shape agricultural practices is essential for promoting sustainable development and improving the living conditions of these communities. The main objective is to analyze how social, economic, environmental, and cultural factors influence the agricultural production models adopted by smallholder farmers. The study aims to provide insights and reflections for policymakers so that public policies take local realities into account and encourage the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. The methodology consisted of a qualitative analysis based on a review of articles published between 2018 and 2025. The articles were collected through automated keyword searches on journal websites, Google Scholar, and the Research Rabbit and Consensus applications. Zotero Desktop software was used to manage the references of the reviewed articles. The results indicate that the choice of agricultural practices is strongly influenced by a combination of factors, including the farmers’ education level, access to credit and markets, environmental conditions (such as climate and soil), and local cultural beliefs. The study concludes that the development of public policies focused on training farmers to address climate change, strengthening community organizations, and improving access to financial resources and markets is essential. It is necessary to promote the integration of traditional knowledge and technological innovations that respect local specificities, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable agriculture.
