Abstract

This study aimed to identify and characterize the production chains of pigs and of goats in the municipalities of São Luís, Paço do Lumiar and São José de Ribamar. To obtain the primary data, the questionnaires was made with producers and consumers, as well as through discussions with representatives of the institutions linked to these activities. The results showed that the pig farming uses predominantly family hand labor, semi-intensive system and low technological level. In turn, goat breeding uses paid labor, however, without contractual relationship and with low technology. The underground limits the distribution and the local consumption. The sale of the production takes place mainly at fairs and /or local markets. The main obstacles of these chains are the lack of technical assistance and technology on the properties, the absence of activity logs. One can also say these production chains of pigs and goats of São Luís, Paço do Lumiar and São José de Ribamar is disorganized, requiring support from the public and private sectors.
